Using Eco mode, something that makes me feel a little guilty, but I love those lazy 2nd gear starts and early upshifts, the car just saunters along.
Tire pressure light on? Not around 8008x miles?

The TPMS annoys me, it’s on because the fronts are at 41 psi cold, and the rears are 30-32. I need to put air in the rear, but I don’t plan to lose control and jump a curb with it. It’s not a BMW.
1st gear starts are almost violent in this car, it’s so quick. I use Sport occasionally, but not that often.

All it takes is 2 psi :)
Your car is what I call “the last of the V8 Interceptors”. I’ve maybe only used sport once - no need for it in local traffic. I hope the 212 is treating you well, I still hear very few issues with them.

AMGtech - now with more recalls!

We’re starting to see issues on 278's. Big ones.
Oil in harnesses, cam adjusters, badly scored cylinders in cars with good service history. A year or two ago, every tech in our shop would've happily owned a 278. Now? Not one.

See my comment to fintail. Not to scare you, just be aware. It's mostly GL's having issues, but not all.

Wow, that’s not good. I think I heard of timing chain noise or something, but nothing beyond that. However, I am not exposed like you are.
Anything on M276, or too new?
Fintail just took a nice gulp with the latest shop bill, but mostly maintenance rather than real failures.

Strange. How many miles typically? I'm at 58k or so, no issues so far. Love the car.

276 is oddly really good. The turbo ones, yet to be determined I guess, but so far so good. Some harness issues, but those are much cheaper to fix.
The chain noise on both of those has been a thing forever, but it’s just secondary tensioners and installing a check valve, not an issue after 2014 MY.
Fintail is to be expected though, with that age. You shouldn’t expect to see a cylinder that looks like someone took an angle grinder to it on a 6-7 year old GL with 80k and decent service history. We first started seeing it on engines that had consistently gone 3-4k over on oil changes for 100k miles so we didn't really think much of it. But over the 6 months or so we've been seeing it on otherwise perfect examples of how to maintain a car.

Lowest I've seen was like 65k. Most are over 80-90k. Average mileage for the years. I haven't seen it happen on a 2015 or newer, which is approximately the clean point for the oily harnesses. Check yourself, or have your mechanic check, to see if there is oil at the connector of any of your cam sensors, they're easy to get to. If there's oil there, then check the M connector at the engine computer.

That’s not good if it is a widespread issue, seeing as it is the engine in the vast majority of later model S-class (I think). I don’t read the forums for that car, and the cars with it are mostly too barge-y for me. I guess I’ll continue wanting to go down that path.
My S213 has been virtually flawless in its first year and a half. Only quirks are sometimes juddery wipers (a MB thing for some time now), and only half my console lid is heated - I think the whole thing should warm up with warmth and comfort. Otherwise, smooth sailing, maybe this will be the one I buy out. I was thinking of buying out the E250, but the color was just dark enough to be a maintenance chore, and I guess I had an itch for something new. Haven’t heard of too many E250 Bluetec issues, the emissions systems might worry me most.
I need to realize the fintail isn’t thirtysomething like when I bought it - it is now pushing 60. Your garage mates would either run to it or run away from it if it tur ned up there for a repair.

Interestingly, the vast majority of cases I’ve seen were in GL. A couple G, and one E. But no S or SL. GL and E are by far most common, but very few E have a 278 engine. There is a suspicion among colleagues that oil in the harness, ME, and sensors throws signals off enough to lean out the cylinders too much or run too hot or put ignition timing just off enough to create the perfect scenario for cylinder damage under high boost and load conditions, particularly for heavy vehicles like GL. Haven’t seen the cylinder issue on 157 though.
651 had been real solid for us. Just lots of NOx sensors and some adblue system weirdness from time to time. Otherwise issues have been one-off, few and far between. But your wagon should be solid too. Do the bug juice cleaner on the glass, new blades, and if the shudder is still there double check the blade angles. No rain-x. And yeah, the whole thing should be heated, warranty oughta cover you.
Run. For sure. But people would definitely check it out. We mostly don’t even want to touch 129 and 124, let alone 107 or 126. We do, but we don't really like to. We've got one guy who likes the old stuff, but your car might be too old even for him.

OK - I’ll be sure to check it out. The scored cylinders is scary to me - - read your responses to fintail, and that makes sense, I guess. But I’d be pretty unhappy if I had scored cylinders in a car I was taking care of.

Agreed. We all think it's pretty shitty. A friend's of mine actually just traded his E550 in because of oil in the harness. CarMax gave him more than he expected. Problem is that now he can't figure out what to replace it with. Hard to find something that equals it.

I’ve got a CPO warranty through next June, so I think what I’ll do is check the sensors regularly, and hopefully either get it covered by the warranty if there’s an issue, or trade it if I find a problem after that, does that make sense?
But yeah, I don't know what I would replace it with.
fintail

I suspect you are right - the mass of the GL isn’t mating well with that engine. Fortunately, I have no plans to get a GL of any variant , so for me anyway, that one not to worry about. If I don’t buy out the wagon, I’d seriously consider another E250, otherwise, I might migrate to something older.
MB forums are full of people complaining about wiper judder. I’m starting to think it is something with the glass. My first (pre facelift) 212 had the issue - I clayed the glass, had the tension adjusted, had the blades replaced twice, nothing. Then I switched out the OEM (Valeo, I think) rubber with Bosch - 99% improvement. I actually moved those blades to the next car, but on the 3rd 212, the blade holder changed, no dice. Constant judder no matter what I did. The only solution is using the washer, which also leaves residue. I am thinking of looking for aftermarket blades again.
The indy shop I patronize apparently has one guy who likes to work with old cars. The fintail has the M127 - mechanical fuel injection, which would either terrify or fascinate younger techs, no doubt. When I take the car in, I tell them to take their time and don’t worry about issues - it’s usually there for a couple weeks for its service and inspection.

But if the problem is that common on GL below 100k, who’s to say if it’ll happen at higher miles on other models?
Interestingly, I actually prefer aftermarket blades on my 55. The factory ones leave streaks from the pressure points of the arm design. But Bosch icons are perfect. Just hard to find in the right length. We haven’t had any complaints about wiper shudder recently. On the rare occasion we do, we just warranty out the blades and that usually takes care of it. I’m telling you though, the bug juice cleaner stuff is like magic when done correctly. But we also largely use MB washer additive, maybe that makes a difference?
You got someone who likes working on it and knows what they’re doing, just keep throwing money at them, they’ll be hard to replace.

That’s the “summer fit” stuff, right? I’d like something where I can just drive in the rain and have the wipers work smooth, without needing to squirt it. You know, like almost every other car on the road. There’s some weird engineering hiccup causing this.
I am pretty sure I ran a Bosch Icon on my E55 too, an early beam type that actually lasted for years with little degradation in performance.
That’s probably the key to someone wanting to work on one of the older cars - knowing the owner will actually pay the bill. I know a guy who won’t touch certain cars (early V12 W220 especially) because of owners who ran away.

There’s summer fit and winter fit. Summer is just soap, winter is soap and alcohol. But they don’t smell like other washer additives or fluids I know of. I hear you though.
We’ve actually had a ratty R sitting in the basement for a few months now, easily pre-covid, because the customer won't pay his bill. Not even a big bill, just diagnosis. But it's not really useable without fixing, PS won't hold fluid at all anymore. Pretty sure lawyers are involved at this point, but I don't know to what extent.

I suspect the legal fees would easily exceed the value of a broken R, which unless it is an AMG or something really special, is effectively a parts car. Will your shop pursue a lien and take ownership, if it comes to that?

Definitely nothing special, not even any uncommon options. Honestly probably not worth more than a few hundred considering condition. No idea what’s going to happen with it.
